Japanese farmer sold a Black-rind watermelon for up to 300,000 Yen ($3800 USD)

Japanese love Suicas (Watermelons) and apparently their love for this delicious fruits! Indeed, the Mainichi Daily News in Japan reported that a Black-rind watermelon from an Hokkaido farmer fetched a winning bid price of 300,000 Yen, around $3800 USD… Impressive when you know that Watermelons (Densuke watermelons) are already extremely expensive in Japan and are sold at around 5,000 Yen each ($61 USD).

    That’s crazy. $3800.
Are watermelons really $61? Over here they are cheap.

True but look at what we pay for Wagyu steak.

Mmmm suicas, … and you didn’t apply for a review sample?   ;-)

No, you are wrong!  The average person isn’t paying ¥5000 for watermelons or even seeing that price for normal suica. I’ve lived here 10 years now, and ¥1500 is the top price I’ve seen in my grocery stores just west of Tokyo. I could probably buy from an exclusive department store for ¥2000 something. In fact, we get great medium sized suica from our local Kobe Gyom Supermarket for less than ¥400. Yeah, life is expensive here, but there is not need to exaggerate in your article.

Cool down man and don’t shoot the messenger! I am not doing shopping so I have no clues on how much suica cost and the only time I bought one I did not even check/care about the price!
This said, THIS very particular one are expensive check the Mainichi Daily News link if you don’t believe me. And this article is all about these very special ones!

Yes, we know that the black one is expensive – I don’t doubt that and am glad you mentioned it. However, it’s not accurate to say that suica normally cost ¥5000 – that’s just not true. :-)

Is the black rind variety supposed to be more flavorful, juicy or whatever; or is that price only for the rarity?
