A lot of things have been written on both ASEM and EFi-X and I am sure that what you may have read about ASEM and EFi-X was most probably negative, but as far as I am concerned, what you all read was just purely wrong.
But let’s put this aside for now and let me try to explain you what EFi-X is. The EFi-X is a USB universal Booting Processing Unit that once plugged to your motherboard will let you install and boot pretty much everything ranging from the Obvious OS like Windows and Linux but also OS X! Yep you are reading this right, EFi-X is the easiest way for you to not only install pretty much everything on your PC Hardware but also gives you the possibility to select which OS you want to run.
At one given time on my EFi-X Rig I had Installed Windows 7, Ubuntu, OSX 10.5.8 and 10.6.X and was capable to jump between OS after each reboot.
Now that you know about EFi-X let’s talk about what’s new here. First and for most, ASEM announced that it will soon support OSX 10.7 on its entire line-up of product ranging from EFi-X 1.0 to 3.0 (Including 1.1 and 1.7), a great news for every EFi-X 1.0 owners who have been left in the dark when ASEM announced that this version will not be able to run OSX 10.6 as advertise.
The other news is the Announcement during Computex 2011 of ASEM latest EFi-X module of EFi-X 3.0. This EFi-X has been redesign from the ground-up with faster components allowing a booting time 50% faster than the actual 1.7 EFi-X. The 3.0 also includes a series of LED that will give you a direct visual indication on your EFi-X health and in case of problem will help you to indicate to ASEM Support what’s going on with your EFi-X and allow them to help you fixing it.
Finally, EFi-X 3.0 can now be “open” you will now be capable to physically see what’s inside EFi-X 3.0 and even have the possibility, with the help of ASEM support to fix some of many possible hardware problems you may have (a limited numbers of them can be fix).
But EFi-X 3.0 is not the ultimate EFi-X yet, nope this 3.0 will be in fact the latest USB module from ASEM, the next step or the EFi-X X.X (ASEM did not give us any name for this release yet) will be a PCIe version of their EFi-X that will deliver faster booting time and possibly allow you to directly bypass your motherboard bios. I am not sure how and when this will be possible but it is ASEM’s goal to one day provide an EFi-X that will completely bypass any Motherboard Bios to directly allow you to boot on EFi-X Menu loader.
The last “wonder” that ASEM announced during Computex was Alexandria, a mini PCi-Express to PCi-Express 1x Converter that will allow you to install mini PCI-E 3G, CDMA, WLAN, WWLAN, MODEM… Cards on your Desktop as well as being fully compatible with Linux, Windows and OSX 10.5 to 10.7
This Said, I have been using EFi-X on a Core i7 Desktop PC for the past 2 Years, despite what your heard on EFi-X I am personally satifsfided with this product, I finally have the computer I always wanted to have, a PC Capable to run Windows 7 alongside Ubuntu and OSX without having to spend hours to tweak my rig… EFi-X is a real Plug-&-Play experience. Sure sometimes things doesn’t work always like it should I personally have a shutdown problem on OSX and I have time to time to manually power off my PC, but I can live with that.
