NICT demonstrate Wireless Charging Using A Flexible 2D Communication Sheet

The National Institute of Information and Communications Technology demonstrated an efficient wireless power transmission system using a two-dimensional communication device at Wireless Japan 2011.

This system allows devices to be wirelessly charged as well as transmit data when placed on the conductive sheet. In this demonstration they showed that they can concentrate the power transmission to single points on the sheet, activating devices individually and enhancing the power transmission efficiency.

“When a 2.4Ghz high frequency signal is transmitted through the sheet, it becomes a wireless conductive object. The structure of the sheet is such that it captures electromagnetic waves within the sheet, and has the characteristics of being able to conduct electricity and perform communications.”

To strengthen the efficiency of the power supply, instead of spreading the electromagnetic waves evenly throughout the sheet, they concentrate them on a single point by controlling the phase of the input electrode array. This forces the electromagnetic wave to converge on a specific area of the sheet.

“We emit a pilot signal and measure the direction of the signal to estimate the position, and we focus on that position.”

“The conversion efficiency of the main element is around 40%, so it is not something that sends a large charge, but rather we think of it as a small charge that is broadly dispersed around the sheet. Ideally we think it should receive power of around 1W.”

In the future, NICT plan to create this sheet from a soft fabric which could be worn, creating a network or ‘surface LAN’, providing for an unprecedented communications format and range.
