More news recently came out from SID 2011 in Los Angeles last week, since this news was from behind closed doors. Sony demoed a new bendable display technology, an extremely flexible black and white e-paper display that is driven by thin-film transistors (organic TFTs) and can be bent to a 5mm curvature radius.

While it appears we’re entering a world where everyone seems to want tablets, it seems that companies are still looking to improve their e-readers. With technology like this, although only a prototype, it probably won’t be long until e-readers will be exactly like books and magazines, being able to be rolled up and carried along with us in our pockets. Sony also showed off a 13.3-inch flexible color e-paper although it wasn’t able to bend as much as the black and white e-paper.

This black and white e-paper that Sony did show off though was a 13.3-inch sheet with a 1,600 x 1,200 (150ppi) resolution. When they demoed it, it was reported that it brought cheers from everyone in the audience. Hopefully it doesn’t take too long for this technology to hit the market.
