Square Enix’s cute smartphone girls will teach you english

Only for the Japanese market, but surely worth a mention. Square Enix (the guy’s from Final Fantasy, Parasite Eve, ..) created a smartphone app for the Japanese who like to refresh their English knowledge. Now they give you the chance to do this in a bishoujo-rich adventure game entitled “Summer Story”.

The essence of the game resides in making the player to converse with four pretty girls and get educated during gameplay. The main characters are:

  • A flower-maniac daughter of an English aristrocrat
  • An Australian chick who likes to work as a tour guide
  • A Japanese/English teacher keen to educate you
  • An anime-obsessed American blonde bimbo

The game was developed with the help of a native English speaker from NHK’s educational program. This should guarantee the concept to actually “work”.

Price for iPhone/iPad app: 800 Yen

Any suggestions for games that do the opposite (that is: English -> Japanese)? Or will there be a Summer Story for that?

Yea, I’ve been thinking about this too, why they don’t convert it to do English > Japanese. I think the main factor here is the fact that the time and effort they’ve put into it now is balanced towards an anime-fanatic market. So they figured out the chances of selling it to a USA/EU based market is a financial and marketing liability.

Don’t forget this is a 2D game without much flashy interaction, in general this concept never appealed much to non-JP markets.
