‘Wii 2′ to be revealed at E3 in June, coming 2012
Early this morning Nintendo revealed that the successor to its popular Wii will be coming next year. There have been many rumors leading up to this, as it is also rumored that the new video game system will be codenamed Project Cafe, but all of that is speculation.
All that we know for a fact so far is that the “Wii 2″ will be coming in 2012 and that there will be a playable model plus more specs and details announced during E3 Expo 2011 from June 7-11 in Los Angeles.
Here is the letter from the Nintendo Japan website:
Nintendo Co. Ltd. has decided to launch in 2012 a system to succeed Wii, which the company has sold 86.01 million units on a consolidated shipment basis between its launch in 2006 and the end of March 2011.
We will show a playable model of the new system and announce more specifications at the E3 Expo, which will be held June 7-9, 2011 in Los Angeles.
Sales of the new system have not been included in the financial forecasts announced today for the fiscal term ending March 2012.
If I had to guess, I’d say it should launch around spring 2012 or November 2012 since those are the times Nintendo usually launches a new product. Nintendo Wii launched on Nov. 19, 2006 in US and Dec. 2, 2006 in Japan. Anything is possible though.
IGN has previously done a story with everything they know about it, plus they created the concept image above from rumor sketches, if you’d like more info.
