QNAP Taiwan just announced a range of new features for their TurboNAS customers through QPKG’s. The term QPKG is short for “QNAP Package” files, essentially a plugin you can download for your NAS device. They are prebuilt by QNAP to be installed and operable on your hardware in a matter of seconds. The range in QPKG flavors is quite broad, from content management systems up to VOIP phone services to web compilers.

Impressive from QNAP is the fact that they are very open to new ideas and technology. They already had their own QGet download client, yet they found a way to impress us by adding pyLoad (lightweight Rapidshare/MegaUpload/Etc.. downloader) and Transmission’s torrent client (very famous for Mac users). Furthermore QNAP already had a spledid featured web gallery of their own, but then again they wanted to broaden the choice by adding “Gallery” wich is another popular photo album organiser. Also noteworthy is PiWik, a real-time web analytics application.

The updated QPKG applications include: PS3 Media Server, a DLNA compliant UPnP Media Server for the PS3, with the purpose of streaming or transcoding media files stored on the NAS; WordPress, a free, open-source personal publishing system that allows you to easily create a complex blog, or web log, on your site; OpenLDAP, an open source implementation of the Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) and is packaged with phpLDAPadmin to provide the web-based administration functionality
