SD-PDT1 the 1Seg (DMB) TV Tuner from Toshiba

The DMB fever is gaining the world and Japan as well and each makers from Nintendo to Toshiba start to release a DMB TV Tuner, and this is precisely Toshiba that we are talking about today with their SD-PDT1. Well everything started with a very good idea, bringing a DMB TV Tuner to already existing portable DVD player but then… somehow they completely screw up the project once the build it up… WHO on earth will buy such bulky with too much cables, a big antenna and use it?(Even for a Car mount system this is still too complicated).

Hope this is not too silly a question but if you have a seg1 capable gadget in Japan (I am thinking of getting the new Viao UX to be released shortly) exactly what TV channels can you get? Do you have to pay a license fee?

    many thanks

well U can get most of the Japanese Channels and it is free (as far as I remember)

Many thanks. Is that the BS channels? Or the analogue ones? Am I right in thinking that being down in Kyushu I will have to wait until the end of the year before digital capabilty commences?

    Kawasaki,

The 1seg channels are the same channels as you currently get on your analogue TV. The only difference is that they are transmitted digitally. As a result, you won’t be able to view them until terrestrial digital hits Kyushu at the end of this year. Check this map to make sure you’re in the coverage area before you go buying anything:

Anything orange -> yellows will be active at the end of the year.
