AU runs on CDMAW (the "W" is for Wideband). There are NO phones which actually "work" on the Japanese cellphone network. You can piggyback over their system at an exorbitant fee. There used to be prepaid track phones you could pick up in Japan but those were all done away with post 9-11. The only way around it is to RENT a phone at the airport or through any similar cellphone rental system. Japanese can bring their phones to the U.S. or other countries and use them (like Russian bullet theory) but again it isn't cheap. Many Japanese rent phones (SoftBank which is AT&T counterpart allows for SIM swap out) prior to travel outside of Japan. A CDMAW iPhone is bound to happen now that the release has happened in the U.S. and the exclusive carrier deals come to an end. Bring on AU iPhone!

An unlocked GSM iPhone from the US will work on SoftBank or NTT Docomo; the third major carrier here, AU, uses CDMA, which is why this article assumes the CDMA iPhone will be for the AU network. Stan, if your O2 phone worked on the Docomo network, it's probably on roaming and turning off data was the right move.
