IC stickers for iPhone by SoftBank

SoftBank, one of the three mobile phone providers in Japan, released yesterday stickers with IC capability for the iPhone 4. IC cards are very frequent in Japan and can be used almost everywhere, be it department stores, restaurants or train stations. Three different stickers are available, with three different standards, Waon, Nanaco and Edy. Measuring 55.4×112mm and weighing 14g, they cover the whole back of your phone (except for the camera, of course). I’m not sure i’d get one personally, as those aren’t the format I normally use, and I’m worried it will prevent me from keeping my protective case. For those of you interested, SoftBank sells them for 2980 yens.

I have been reading about Softbank’s big plan to enable NFC for the iPhone. Personally I am not sure that this is really going to be a big win for the consumer. Firstly who wants to pay 2,980 yen for a big ugly sticker for the back of your phone? Essentially you are paying allot of money for what is normally given away free. I didn’t pay anything for my Edy card; why would I want to pay for this?

Secondly the device isn’t going to be nearly as convenient as other NFC devices that are built into Japanese phones; as the iPhone has no way to communicate with the card. So no mobile recharging capability, etc. Seems like a DOA product….

Yeah the point is more than valid, plus I think that you can actually check how much money you got on your phone.
Anyway it’s always fun to see that smartphones in Japan usually lacks feature that were taken for granted in “dumb” phone.

Today I was poking around Tokyu Hands and saw that they have an integrated iPhone 4 case that has a special integrated compartment on the rear of the case for your favorite NFC card (Pasmo, Suica, Edy, etc.) retailing for 1,300 yen. It would appear that while its still not integrated with the phone that somebody has already built a better mouse trap (in comparison to Softbanks wonderful new product). At least it isn’t as tacky as a sticker….
