IDC Japan Releases Japan Q3 Mobile Phone Report

IDC Japan Releases Japan Q3 Mobile Phone Report

The Japanese subsidiary of the IT marketing research company International Data Corporation released a report today announcing cell phone shipments in the third quarter in the domestic market. Mobile phone shipments increased 18.9 percent from the same period last year for a grand total of 8.66 million units, continuing a four-quarter trend of record growth in both the smartphone and dumbphone markets.

Sharp is keeping its four-and-a-half-year streak as the top cell phone manufacturer this quarter, with a market share of 18.8%, followed closely by previously-fourth-place Panasonic Mobile, whose 16.6% share is supported primarily by its handsets on NTT Docomo’s network. Fujitsu was pushed down by Panasonic but was able to maintain its 15.1% slice of the market, and Kyocera (“They still make phones?”) comes in fourth riding on their Au handsets with 12.7%, up 1.3 percent from last quarter. Apple, with their top-selling iPhone 4, hit the top five for the first time with 12.2% market share.

IDC Japan projects that the fourth quarter will see further growth by Sharp, especially with their new smartphones; this will push smartphone shipments in Japan over 20% of domestic handset numbers and also lend to positive growth in yearly figures.

Its simply ridiculous that Nokia the worlds number 1 handset and smartphone maker doesn’t sell anything into Japan.
I wonder how Apple managed to get their foot in the door of this private club?

    • Daimaou – G-A.G

Nokia tried several years ago, but what they introduces was so “behind” compare to Japanese phones that they quickly had to move away from Japan. Apple Succeed for several reasons, first I am sure that somehow they convinced the right person, but Apple also had a huge advantage here, since it was at the time the number one in DAP sales, the iPhone 3G also bringer many new features that no other Japanese handset had, real games, nice screen, multitouch, real Email client and real Web browser.

Also Japanese and the “Elitist” Mac culture match well, Japanese love to belong to a en Elitist Group and love beautiful design, Apple and the iPhone 3G bringer that as well.

Despite everything it was said at the time I knew Apple will get its chance here, and if you look around you in the Subway in Tokyo (No true in other cities I believe) you will see iPhone 3GS and 4 everywhere around you.

I think that is a shame but I’m sure the market will continue to favour the local brands.

it is shame for japanese cellphone or smartphone company… why? cause the international brand like apple iphone, htc, sony ericsson, etc. smartphones doing their job well to see to the customers that the daily needs features and functions, etc. of the smartphone itself. the japanese smartphone or cellphones is only focus to the one kind feature example it is 3d phone it is only 3D and good camera, video record. But in internet browsing and games etc. did they enhance it? or did they do or add some other features that can’t be found in the international smartphone? that why the Japanese customer will not buy the local brands itself it is lack of many things… think twice see each their specifications, features, etc… and you will find out and I’m also Japanese but I hate the local brand because of what I have said earlier and I’m using HTC Nexus One Android Smartphone…

      You’re Japanese? lol

The local companies have been lax because they had the market to themselves with everybody watching and copying (especially Apple and Taiwan). Then there is the wah, if you’re Japanese then you know what I mean. Foreign companies now rely on the strength of a couple of big brothers to control the mobile market worldwide, this is a good way to eliminate the competition including the smaller and minor companies who has done nothing wrong but manage on their own in local markets.

Nokia and Ericsson have dominated long enough, it wasn’t that they couldn’t survive in Japan at the time but they were nowhere near as good (1 line of text, monochrome, highly radioactive etc).

Apple hit the spot with the iPod because they saw how complex local DAPs were and created something that was so simple to use. Also Sony was not willing to jump onto the MP3 bandwagon until much later which created their downfall (and among other things).

Japan can certainly do better than that.

    • nameless

yup I’m Japanese… yeah you’re right they have market themselves with everybody and what you say? copying? i don’t think so… and competition among companies are there if you don’t see it… and you’re right they manage well the local but the products of local don’t click see yourself in the top page you will see in the 80% of Japanese using Iphones and the local companies only do alternative way to catch the attention of the customers by the sharp company and fujitsu to release the 3D smartphones but the specs of that phones are not match with the international brand companies cause they are lack of capabilities and features only a phone not to be called smartphone itself.

    • nameless

oh I forgot something the local companies is not produce phone only It’s my mistake to call that it is only phone and it is also not a smartphone that they call… for me it is a featured phone…. you will agree now? lol….
