Pantech Introduces “Urban Cool” Biometric Fingerprint Recognition Handset in Taiwan

SEOUL, May 10, 2006: Pantech Group, the number two mobile phone manufacturer in South Korea, today announced the launch in Taiwan of the PG-6200, its new fingerprint recognition technology phone, as part of plans to expand its market share in the wider Asian region.

Distributed by Arcoa Communications, the third largest mobile handset distributor in Taiwan, the PG-6200 is targeted at premium business users and trend conscious consumers, incorporating enhanced biometric systems to ensure superior yet convenient security functions.

Sung-Kyu Lee, President & CEO of Pantech&Curitel Communications, Inc., said: “The PG-6200 provides users with the most advanced biometric security technology, but also offers a sense of urban cool with its chic look and up to the minute features. In Taiwan, we expect the PG-6200 to be the landmark for mobile phone technology and design this year.”

Users of the PG-6200 handset – which is also being introduced in Russia and Hong Kong this week – can utilize their fingerprints to access lock-in keys and memory dials. Only a registered fingerprint allows authorization to key in by sweeping fingerprints instead of pushing keys.

In addition to the fingerprint recognition applications, the PG-6200 has been designed to incorporate advanced multimedia functions. Key features include a 2 mega pixel camera supporting video clip recording and viewing, MP3 player functionality and user memory as large as 20MB to store images and music files.

Recently, the PG-6200 model has earned plaudits for its groundbreaking design. The handset was one of three Pantech phones honored recently at the prestigious iF (International Forum) Design Awards for excellence in the design of cellular phones. It shows its major design attributes when folded, revealing a unique side contour in the form of a smooth flowing curve.

Taiwan – originally the first overseas market in which Pantech began to offer handsets under its own brand in 2003 – has a rapidly growing mobile phone population, with the total market size expected to reach about eight million users this year. GSM is the predominant mobile standard in the country, while demand for 3G services is increasing.

Pantech, whose handset sales rose about 20% in Taiwan last year, aims to maintain its growth in sales this year, with a view to positioning the Pantech brand as the premium handset brand in the Taiwanese market over the coming years.
