The planned decline of Japanese Culture by the governing class

Nothing dramatic but still more than noteworthy, the japanese government announced today that it planned on reviewing the holiday system, so as to have all the people NOT taking them during the same week in spring and in summer. It might not seem like much from the outside, but this is a major change in japanese culture as it is. In fact a survey just recently published, conveyed amongst 3000 men and women across Japan, shows that 56.1% are strongly against this proposition, with only 28% favorable.

The plan would be to split Japan into 5 distinct geographical regions, and distribute holiday seasons accordingly, but the government said that they are waiting for a consensus before applying anything.

Yup and Obon festival, the plan might be to actually move those depending of the Area of Japan you live in, which might come as a cultural shock to the more traditionalist people here :p

Am I understanding that the idea – these holidays virtually shutdown the whole country dont’ they? If staggered between areas business would still flow? But fracturing the country during these special/traditional holidays – I’d be against it. You might even lengthen the holidays this way as people could travel from region to region celebrating the Holiday multiple times.

they just want to spread out the holidays so that we dont all take them at the same time!

Its crazy here during obon and oshogatsu. Tokyo is empty and the trains, planes, and roads are maxed out and extremely expensive.

Thing is, Tokyo, Yokohama, Chiba and saitama will probably fall under the same holidays so its still going to be crazy expensive and packed anywhere you go…..
