Blingy Casio G-Shock’s new Deco-G, confusingly appealing

The recent release of Casio’s limited edition Deco-G, part of the G-Shock Mini family has left me feeling confused and amused. It is a regular G-Shock Mini that is shock resistant, water resistant to 100m, is auto EL backlit with afterglow, can tell the time in 48 cities, capable of 5 daily alarms, and countdown timer. So what makes this watch special? Well, it is covered in “hand-selected” black crystals. Apparently, it is designed for “stylish, active” women. I am glad that that was included in the press release, because I was confused. When I was a teenager, G-shocks were considered cool. I never had one but I understood the appeal; they come in different colours, can be kind of customized, are tough enough to withstand teenager activities like snowboarding and field parties, and aren’t too pricey. I have been out of high school for ten years now, and G-Shocks have been totally off my radar for a while. I needed to do some research to learn what this is all about. So, after some brief googling, I got to the bottom of things. Rich celebrity types have been wearing customized G-Shocks with real gold or platinum and real diamonds for several years now. Go know. These custom jobs are obviously very costly, and now Casio offers the bling to the masses, well not really, they only made 50 of them, thankfully. The bling is captivating after a while, but I won’t be fooled, these are ugly. If you really want one, hurry on over to Bloomingdales and bring $200.
