Panasonic set to play catch-up in 2011 with Android smartphone
Panasonic has just announced that they will be releasing their own Android based smartphones in Japan in 2011 to compete against the current market leader iPhone. They will follow the Japan release with international releases in 2012. Reuters quotes Osamu Waki, head of Panasonic’s mobile communications as saying: “We misjudged the speed at which smartphones would be taken up in the Japanese market. With the rapid shift to Android, we want to catch up quickly.” And hopefully they do. While iPhone is great, having some competitors working to push ahead with Android will keep mobile computer all the more interesting.
There no information yet as to the physical design, interface, special features or functions, but taking a look at Panasonic’s Lumix phone (image accompanying this article) is an indicator of what the company is capable of.
