Samsung Galaxy S Receives World’s First Smartphone Wi-Fi Direct Certification

Samsung Galaxy S Receives World's First Smartphone Wi-Fi Direct Certification

Samsung’s Galaxy S, already on sale in various countries including Japan, was certified capable of the Wi-Fi Direct standard by the Wi-Fi Alliance, making it the first smartphone to make the list in the world. Wi-Fi Direct is a new way of interconnecting wifi-capable devices without a wireless access point acting as a central hub, for quick peer-to-peer connections to share media or play games – because more devices have wifi support than Bluetooth. What’s nice about this new standard is that only one device in the pool has to be Wi-Fi Direct-capable – as what Direct devices do is negotiate amongst themselves to determine which device acts as a master access point – so anybody with a Galaxy S can use all their devices as a peer-to-peer-to-peer-to-peer-etc network without a dedicated WAP.
