LG’s new IPS Series 6 displays

I went to LG’s latest press conference in Japan on Wednesday, and I was able to grab a few pics of LG’s new IPS 6 series displays: the IPS226V in 21.5″ and the IPS236V in 23″. Let me tell you, I was impressed. As you’ll see from my pictures, the difference between IPS, TN and VA technologies is simply breathtaking. If you didn’t know, IPS panels are used for the iPhone 4, for example. They are very solid and considered the best for overall LCD quality (colors, viewing angles, etc).

Slower response time has long been a complaint of gamers regarding IPS displays (anything over 8ms can cause motion blur), but LG’s new panels boast a 6ms response time; with their 1,920 x 1,080 resolutions, 5,000,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio, 250 nits of brightness, HDMI port, reduced power consumption and 178-degree viewing angles, they are the perfect screens for… well, just about anything, from watching videos to fast-paced gaming.

Design wise, the new displays are very slim (19.5mm in depth) and look pretty sleek — except for one tiny detail: I can’t get over the wine glass-shaped base. Seriously, what the…? But that’s just my opinion, so maybe you’ll love it! (And for screen quality that good I’d be willing to overlook it!)

No word on pricing, but apparently IPS226V is set to launch in November and IPS236V in December of this year. (Now you all know what to get me for Christmas)

I quote: “No word on pricing”

Expect a high one. These IPS panels are used in Apple Imac’s, there are the cream of the crop if you are a graphical designer or DTP guy. How odd they aren’t producing 24″ and 27″ models, now those would actually sell much better to their target industries.

I wonder why nobody makes Quad HD monitors in size of 34-36″ @3840×2160 res. That is much needed for digital photo specialists.

Ike, they use LG’s new e-IPS panel which is a lower cost technology. It should be sub $400 for the 21.5″.

I’m considering buying this monitor when it comes out but I agree that the stand and chassis design looks horrible. They have this beautiful, high-tech, professional screen surrounded by a glossy, fingerprint-prone, cheap plastic. And why would I want my monitor stand to look like a wine glass? I’d rather it look like a monitor stand that’s stable and adjustable. And what’s up with that clear plastic piece hanging under it with the blue LED? It reminds me of those riced up Honda Civics with underglow. Ridiculous…

Thank you for pointing this out.
Design wise, I guess samsung has set a bit of a trend with “expensive looking” glass look a like bezels. Although, they are so common now that everybody knows it’s actually cheap plastic with a fancy led put in.
