Ecologically sound alternative to Styrofoam

Ecologically sound alternative to Styrofoam

So, you’ve just bought yourself a shiny new TV, computer, microwave, fish tank filter; whatever it is, if it is in anyway fragile, chances are that it was packaged in Styrofoam. While it was once considered a wonder product that could seriously reduce damage to fragile goods during shipping, Styrofoam and similar products require petroleum to be produced, and it takes forever to biodegrade. With the amount of shiny goodies we consume in our modern lives, the habit of using Styrofoam as packaging has got to go.
EcoCradle is an alternative to Styrofoam packaging that takes less energy to produce and it is completely biodegradable. You see, EcoCradle is made out of seed husk and mushroom roots and is actually grown in a mold into the shape that fits the product to be packed. After you have unpacked your loot, EcoCradle packaging can be tossed in the garden compost. Some companies are already using it in their packaging. This is a very exciting innovation, and since it’s produced mainly from agricultural byproducts, it’s pretty affordable too.

Seriously, Apple who holds the flag ECO high should be the first to incorporate this in its products !

In the early 90′s we used compressed pop-corn to do this and worked pretty well. And every one has all the tech needed.

Very cool. However, I’m of two minds: While I don’t want something that’ll last for generations taking up landfills, I often hang on the the packing materials (in case I move, need to ship it back, sell or otherwise send to someone else) so hopefully it doesn’t compost itself as long as you keep it dry.

Recycling Styrofoam products and finding an alternative use for them are both beneficial to the environment. New scientific research has also found new ways how they can turn it into bio-degradable waste material.
