Japanese Online University Releases iPad App

Softbank Group subsidiary (and unfortunately-named) Cyber University, an Internet-based distance-learning college with a campus in Fukuoka, Japan, have announced the availability of an app for Apple’s iPad that provides access to recorded video of twenty-four courses taught at the University, ranging from IT Marketing to Japanese Literature to rakugo to a course titled “Preservation and Restoration of Angkor Wat and Other Cultural Legacies”. It’s unfortunately not as open or free as MIT’s OpenCourseWare and other OER initiatives worldwide that emulate that program, but up to 6,300 people a month will get free access for two months (once per person).
The app was introduced for the iPhone and iPod Touch last month, with the same two-months-free program; the iPad version makes it easier to view both the video and class slideshow than the iPhone version, I noticed.
