I lost my xperia and saw this in the shop and decided that a tablet with a phone was the way to go.
I was using my xperia to check mail and internet and using the apps and the actual phone was a very small percentage of my usage.
This is perfect for me.

Well I love my Tab_small size means out does go with me everywhere.
Only communication whilst in the middle of cyclone Yasi.
Photos taken @ that time are more than adequate.
A few annoyances phone screen goes blank during call, can be slow on web.
But allows news over cup of tea in bed each morning, so OK by me, faults & all

You are comparing a smartphone (Tab) with a computer (iPad). I think the Tab incorporates a lot more computer functions than the iPad incorporates telecommunication functions. In fact, the computer doesn’t even do the minimal set of computer functions. The Tab is a very portable device that allows you to leave the computer at home on weekend trips. The iPad is a device that … let’s me continue shopping at the iTunes store even when away from my desk???

Good review. It seems to me that in the end for many people the decision to use this or an ipad will be about the importance of portability to the end user AND/OR freedom of ecosystem. Want to use on a crowded train? Want to have in your bag everyday? Then you might want to go Galaxy Tab. Will you be at home or in the office most of the time? Then maybe Apple.
Likewise if you want security of Apps etc then Apple. If you don’t want to only play in the walled garden then think Android. In either case one thing is clear, more products means more choice and more competition, both of which benefit us, the consumers!

But because of the drastically larger screen on the iPad, the cropped iPad video is STILL larger than the same on the Galaxy Tab. (The silliest thing is the iPad doesn’t even cost more for that larger screen).

Makes your complaint kinda lacking, no?
