[CEATEC 2010] NICT introduces the world’s first 62-channel 3D Sound System.

NICT or the National Institute of Information and Communication Technology, has developed the world’s first sound system capable of representing a moving sound source such as an instrument or a singer in three dimensions.
The New NICT system is able to create a 3D representation including sound source orientation and motion by emitting acoustic signal from 62 independently driven channels in different direction to compose the sound source in space. Simply put, this 62-Channel 3D sound System is capable to give you an almost replica of a Singer voice in any kind of environment…

    People want an acoustic space recreation, not a sound source recreation.

    They want to hear Pavatotti IN Metropolitan, Nasa Challenger ON the launchpad.

    Point sources like that cannot easily recreate sound event spaces and as such, they’ll remain as curiosities for special purpose applications.
