Osaka Police Launch Electronics Store Investigation

Osaka Prefectural Police launched an investigation into Funny Place, an Osaka electronics shop that allegedly sold a wifi antenna that could “connect to others’ private wireless LANs without permission”.

The products in question were marketed by Funny Place as a device that enables freeloading on private wifi, which is not directly illegal under Japanese law. Osaka Police are questioning those involved in the import and sale of these devices, with the intent to charge them with violation of Radio Law, which limits the power output of radio devices such as wifi antennas. This writer believes the device in question is the Taiwanese Gsky GS-27USB; the product pages on Funny Place’s online store at Rakuten have been removed, but mentions of the product still remain on their store page.
