Technical Marvel, Canon new 120Mpix CMOS Sensor

Technical Marvel, Canon new 120Mpix CMOS Sensor

We may not see this “little” baby coming in any of our Canon DSLR anytime soon, but there is hope! Canon latest APS-H CMOS Sensor offer 120Mpix, which is 5x time the resolution of a Canon 1D for example, which also happen to to features a APS-H CMOS sensor as well.

While canon did not gave any details on this new Sensor and if they will propose a camera featuring it any time soon, they in the other hands announced that this little marvel is capable to shoot 1080p video as well as offering a 9.5fps shooting burst mode (photo).

Wow. I wonder how big the sensor is – could they fit it in a current Canon DSLR body and use their standard lenses with it? Or is it physically much larger? Still, impressive.

With Moore’s law applied i’m sure it’s probably the exact same format as a normal APS-H. Since, if it wasn’t then they would have probably called it something new.

That is now in Canon laboratory. It enters the market might be 2016 later. In 2000, we had seen an Eos d30, merely 3MP. We were once unable to imagine an Eos5d MK2 during the 2000.

Nowadays, the digital compact camera has the 1-μm sensor, but the DSLR camera’s difficulty are the image processor, the system speed, and the imaging quality. Canon has already arranged of the competition after 2015, and it told Sony that Canon is a highest top within the camera industry.

While this is impressive I suggest you to see the products and schedule of red company http://www.red.com They already released a world breaking camera and are planning to increase sensor size, dynamic range, and data rate during this year and in the next two. It is worth much attention. Best regards. Cristian

despite the Red camera is impressive, but is not a mainstream in the market, it unprepared to replace the Japanese camera manufacturers.
Canon’s 120MP Sensor is an APS-H size, would be applied on the 135 camera series for a huge market. Most of the folks would buy the DSLR camera in Nikon, Canon, Sony, but is not a Red camera.

Also, the medium format digital camera is usually a better performance in the imaging quality, a larger sensor size, but is too high price and a very limited market.

I bet that this new sensor will be able to record movies up to Full HD 4K

An APS-H sensor is just too small to house 120M pixels;even a full frame would be small.
Above 400 iso the chroma and luminance noise must both go over the roof.
How much can noise can you eliminate with noise reduction tricks and still keep the frames smooth?
Unless Canon found out a way to seriously reduce light leakage among the very tightly packed pixels this is just a prototype to show off their technology;or use it as a basis for a future super 36 x 48 mm sensor.
