Sony announces a new Single Wire Technology for mobile devices.

Sony announces a new Single Wire Technology for mobile devices.

Design for “clamshell” like mobile devices or any other product with moving/folding keyboard/screen, the Single Wire technology developed by Sony aims to replace the good old wiring system made of several cable stuck in a flexible plastic film, also known as Flexible Printed Circuit.

Thanks to Sony new Single Wire technology, companies will be capable to offer both Data and Power transmission on a single Wire.
This technology allow a maximum transmission speed of 940Mbps and a 1.5 to 3.0V power supply voltage.

Using Sony’s Single Wire Technology will allow manufacturers and Sony more flexibility for the design of their future mobile devices, as well as offering a “less” complex manufacturing design.

The diagram shows a “differential cable” with power and data both traveling over two wires, which is good design but understandable. I have no idea how you’d get anything meaningful over a true single wire connection.

easy by good old Multiplexing :)

    • B

Multiplexing? That’s a joke, right? With a single wire (i.e. one single strip or strand of conductive material) you are not realistically going to be able to transfer either power or data from A to B. You could use one wire with ground return (effectively a second wire, and not practical unless you’re driving an electric train or something) or you could use no wires and transfer information and power through induction, but one single wire? Are you going to transfer static charge back and forth or what?

If You’ll look at the picture above, you will see that they use 3 wires: 2 data/power and a screen. It THAT new technology SONY offer to us or it is a joke from the past?
