Robots are invading Akihabara

Japan is crazy about anything that touches the field of robotics, and it’s not difficult to find stores that specialize in that domain. In one of those shops, I found the ZMP NUVO… you now, the robot that cost 24000 EUR in R&D and that is sold now for 4200 EUR. Since it was still in its plastic box, I was not able to find out what this yellow thing does, but for that price, it better does the dishes…

In another category, we have the KHR-1… less expensive for sure and a DIY kit too… and here’s its little brother, the Robonova-1, a 310x180x90 and 1.3kg robot that retails for only 700 EUR.

Here is a great offering by Volks. It costs less, and from what I can tell, does more. They have two different styles, The VS-1 and the retro looking NEON. Here are a couple of links that have pictures and video.

Well, it won’t do the dishes, but it does patrol your house or apartment and lets you see what it sees on your cell phone even when you’re not at home.

Nuvo is really cute, and the design is first class – kind of like a Ferrari of robot design. ZMP is actively promoting it now, and seems to be drawing a lot of attention. They let me play with it for a while during the robot exhibition in Akihabara this past weekend, so I was able to take some video (NUVO demo) while Higa-san from ZMP explained its features. Pretty cool, though still a little pricey for my limited budget.
