Microsoft’s new Display allows 3-D without Glasses

According to the Technology Review, Microsoft’s Applied Sciences Group developed a new lens that eliminates the need to wear those bulky glasses for 3-D videos. The lens features a thin wedge design as about 11 mm thick at its top vs 6 mm at the bottom, so it can easily be incorporated into LCD displays. Microsoft’s prototype 3-D display equipped with this lens features a camera which apparently tracks the viewers and steers the light by switching on/off the LEDs along the bottom edge of the lens. The display is reported to be capable of projecting multiple images simultaneously, delivering 3-D video to two viewers at the same time (one video for each individual eye), regardless of where they are positioned, as well as 2-D video to up to 4 people simultaneously (one video for each person).
