Samsung flaunt 18.5-inch USB-powered LCD monitor

Samsung USb-powered LCD monitor

It seems Samsung did quite a good show at SID 2010, the electronic-display exhibition as it seems among the interesting technologies they showed off there is not only 19-inch transparent AMOLED display but also this 18.5-inch USB-powered LCD monitor. With a power consumption as low as 6.3W, it can be powered via USB 2.0. The only drawback referred to is that since it has edge-lit backlight, it limits the device’s lifetime to 30,000 hours instead of 50,000 for existing LCD monitors. The display features 1366 x 768 pixel resolution, 250cd/m2 brightness, and 1000:1 contrast ratio.

No word on pricing but it is planned to be released in 2011.

Do I miss some additional info regarding power design of regular USB 2.0 ports? My understanding is that one port can provide 500 mA (0.5 A) at 5 V which means 2.5 W maximum. Continuously I wouldn’t count with more than 2.2 W per port. It adds up to 3 normal USB ports to supply the above mentioned 6.3 W.
