Sanyo Li-Ion battery powered Electric Vehicle broke its own Guinness Record

Mira EV

You may remember the electric vehicle Mira EV back from our news on April 21. Yes, it is that very vehicle equipped with Sanyo’s 8,320 cylindrical lithium-ion batteries (18650-type) and had broken the Guinness World Record for the longest distance travelled on a single charge. The travel had been between Tokyo-Osaka (555.6 km).

As of today, Sanyo have announced that Mira EV broke its own record by covering 1,003.184 km without recharge during May 22 to 23, 2010 at a training school for auto racers in Ibaraki, Japan.

Pretty good feat indeed. The only problem is the price of the battery pack plus technologies involved. 8,320 x $3 minimum, = $ 24,960 just in batteries alone. If they are to last, let’s say…8 years? You’re paying $3,120 a year or $260 every month just to cover their replacement costs. They’re saying the prices are going to go down. But have checked the prices of Lithium, Cobalt and other rare metals in the last years? They will skyrocket as soon as EVs. reach the mainstream.
