[Hands-on] Sony’s APS-C size compact Shooter with the NEX-5

[Hands-on] Sony's APS-C size compact Shooter with the NEX-5

We just came back from Sony’s Press conference which was held in the Japanese manufacturer’s HQ in Shinagawa. A long press conference during which was introduced the all-new ASP-C size compact shooter, the NEX-5 and NEX-3.

Since Daimaou has already introduced them as well as their specs here (Sony introduce its APS-C size compact Shooter with the NEX-5 and NEX-3) we will just give you our very first impression regarding the overall quality.
At this moment, we are not able to give you an opinion regarding the image quality, but just about the overall quality.
The camera is well built, and really robust. The NEX-5’s design remains different from their direct competitor, the Olympus Pen E-P2 and the Lumix GF1… You like it or not, it depends on you. The device fits perfectly in our hands, and we appreciated the Dial ring in order to navigate in the menu or in your pictures gallery. We also liked the possibility to tilt the monitor letting you to shoot pictures in different angle.
Regarding the ‘3D Swing Panorama Mode’, this is an interesting features that seems to works well (at least on the device’s monitor). This mode is a continuous shooting mode that will gather all images in order to give you a real panoramic image. On the 2.95-inch LCD, the pictures we got were perfectly gathered…
As for the three lenses provided by Sony, we found them more solid and less cheap than Olympus Pen’s one.

Anyway, we will have to wait for a test sample before giving you our definitive opinion, in particular regarding the picture quality, so stay tuned!

They look uncomfortably small, especially with the 18-55mm lens. How stable with they be with the 18-200mm lens?

They should really push Panasonic and Olympus to go further. Olympus finally advertised the PEN series of television in the U.S.A., which was surprising. The last time I recall any effort (besides the U.S. Open tennis) was when Cheryl Tiegs was a supermodel and she was introducing the OM-10.

I’m really surprised that Sony are bothering since both Samsung and Panasonic are in the market place. They seem to be brutalised by both companies daily. It does make the hybrid camera market more interesting, though.
