I was in Akihabara last month, and was a little disappointed at some of the change - lotsa new cheap crap. Thankfully the model shops are still there, though they're hard to find in the sea of people. Definitely worth a visit, especially for the cute maidens on the street ;)

what's even sadder is that Chinese tourists to Akihabara shops are
complaining about the same thing.... they buy Japanese electronics
to bring back for personal use or gifts and once they get back to China,
they discover the items were "Made in China"!!!!!! Talk about irony.... :)

Just got back from Tokyo and of course Akihabara. Know what you mean by the changes. A heads-up to those not yet familiar with the Maid Cafes - beware!! We went to one, and knowing it was going to be an 'experience' were ready for almost anything. You have to pay to sit down (and it's by the hour!) before you even think about the over-inflated prices for food and drinks. But the biggest warning - check your final bill - they tried to charge us almost 2 times the amount it really was, and had I not questioned it, we would have been royally ripped off. I paid with cash - Make sure you do to, not credit card!! It is the G-rated version of business man going to bar, buying the nice girls some champagne and ending up with an horrendous bill at the end of the night. It is quite obviously aimed at young men heading that way for their manga and anime fix, so thought it was worth mentioning. Save your money for the manga and anime - or those amazing electronic goods :)
