Development of High-Storage Capacity Linear Tape Open Cartridge by TDK.

TDK announced the development and successful certification of its new Linear Tap-Open (LTO) Ultrium 5 cartridge. Being TDK’s fifth generation LTO product our new cartridges come with a 1.5TB storage capacity and a 140MB/s data speed transfer (3TB and 280MB/s with a 2:1 compression ratio).

Made to meet the demands of actual High-speed data transfer, the new LTO Ultrium 5 has been built with ultra-thin, dual-layer tape coating technology that controls the thickness of the magnetic layer on the nanometer scale, plus a special servo writer for recording high-precision servo signals.

What I want to know is how you get 140MB/s out of your server to feed this monster. And even at that speed, it will take 3 hours to fill a 1.5TB tape. Crazy!

  Well, you stream backup of multiple servers at the same time… Obviously, the network becomes the bottleneck at this point (unless you are on the bleeding edge of 10GB net….)
