How cool is your Rice cooker?

SR-SJ2/SK2 Panasonic Rice Cooker

Back when I was still living in France I was used to boil rice in some kind of plastic bag and always had to carefully check the whole thing so that the water wouldn’t boil over… But once arrived in China first and then Japan I discovered rice cooker… Since then I haven’t been able to cook rice the “ancient” barbaric way anymore…

This said, Panasonic just released a new Rice cocker, the SR-SJ2/SK2 series that I personally find really well designed… So I won’t bother you any further with this rice cooker’s many features, but just will let you enjoy our new Wonderful design.

PS… Do where you live people use rice cooker, too?

    i used to just nuke it in the microwave when I was in Canada until my family got a rice cooker over there. This looks pretty high tech though, what with the buttons and electronic display.

    My cooker is simplier than this one, but doing well its job 😉

    My family has almost always had a rice cooker. I am 30 years old and I vaguely remember my mother using a pot to cook rice in. I have had a rice cooker all of my adult life. It has never been one of the fancy ones from Asia but I am thinking of getting one of those. I live in Louisiana were rice is a staple of most peoples diet.

    Philippines here, We use rice cooker too, even high tech ones from japan.
    a lot of filipino people still cook rice the old way though. We filipinos eat rice at breakfast (fried rice), lunch (regular pot rice) and dinner (regular pot rice).

    I have had a rice cooker since forever…when I lived in Taiwan or England or here in the states. Mine is also from Japan, sings twinkle twinkle little star when I start it up.. 😀

    I’m live in Japan now, but I’m originally from Hawaii. Because of the large Asian community there, almost everyone owns a rice cooker. Even my non-Asian friends have them. Probably because Hawaiian-style takeout “plate lunches” are ubiquitous and they always include rice.

    I bought one in Japan a few years back. In Osaka they have Tiger. A Brand that makes Rice cookers for export to 220~240 volt countries. It even has English buttons.
    They make a normal one and an Induction model for overseas customers.

    I used to have a Chinese made rice cooker which was inaccurate and always caused a bit of burned rice on the bottom. This Tiger one I can recommend to all people using 220~140 volts.
    Maybe something for GS4U to deliver to European and Australian readers?

    US here. yeah the panasonics are the really good. the cook time is a little slower than others i’ve used, but it’s very consistent quality. the one i use also functions as a slow cooker and makes small cakes too. got it on amazon.

    Italy. We cook rice the old way (because it’s impossible to make ‘risotto’ with a rice cooker), but last time I went to Japan a rice cooker was the first thing I went to buy (not really the first…almost got it for free with Bic points…). Now it’s sooo easy to cook oriental-style rice dishes!

    As an old person, I have been cooking rice the old fashion
    & it is still the best way.

    I can afford the most expensive rice cooker in the market
    but why waste the money when you can do it the
    old fashion way & cost next to nothing.

    I steam the rice.

    Clean the rice in a container ( few rinses )
    Water level should be about 0.5 inches above the rice.
    Put it in a steamer with steaming hot temperature.
    It take about 20 to 30 minutes.
    Perfectly cooked rice depending on the amount of water.
    0.5 inch or less above rice = rice cooked & “dried”
    more than 0.5 inch = rice cooked but a little wet & soft

    If you dont have a steamer, you can really do it in another way
    with a pot, any pot that can accept direct heat from a stove.

    Clean the rice as usual in a pot.
    ( 0.5 inch or less of water above rice)

    Put the pot over the stove
    Bring the temperature of water to boiling for about a few minutes
    Then reduce the heat to simmering & make sure the cover is closed.

    Take about 10 to 20 minutes for all the water to dry up.
    Once that happened, rice is cooked.
    This is applicable for few cupful of rice,
    any more than that will need a longer time for water to dry up.
    Again, it also depends on “dried cooked rice” or soft rice.

    There is no hard & fast rule on this because different type of rice
    need more or less water & time

    ps: steam rice is the best way & very healthy because no contaminant if
    you use a ceramic or Pyrex glass pot, most of no BURNT rice.

    Today rice cooker pot is aluminum or Teflon coated which will definitely leave
    a trace of aluminum oxide or Teflon.
    Google aluminum oxide & Teflon with regard to health.

    I came from Japan, but I’ve been in the U.S.A. for a long time. I used to cook rice on the stove or in the microwave oven because a Zojirushi rice cooker was too expensive and I didn’t want to compromise. I had a chance to get a National/Panasonic cooker for only US$10 after a coupon. It didn’t work well for me, scorching the bottom, but I later found a Zojirushi model for only US$59 (obviously no micom control) and it’s worked reliably. I even know some white people who use rice cookers simply because they don’t cook rice often and they want it just right. 🙂

      what is the best Japanese rice cooker that you can buy in the US? (if money is no object)

      I recently saw a Zojirushi rice cooker on and it was almost USD$300! The reviews were excellent… but $300?

      Or… (dare I ask?) What is the best rice cooker that you can buy in Japan? There must be some super-fancy high-tech rice cookers that are only sold in Japan, right? 🙂

    is there such a thing as an IH rice cooker w/an “internal” stainless steel pot NOT external like Zojirushi? so far i’ve only seen teflon non stick type interiors and they are plenty expensive!

    I live in the UK, I have a Zojirushi rice cooker…I love it – it’s transformed my cooking completely – I eat rice a lot more now and I love the twinkle, twinkle little star it plays when the rice is done! I know I had difficulty finding Zojirushi as only one company supplies them in the UK (and Europe), so if anyone else is interested it’s Yum Asia ( My rice cooker is super-cool and I wouldn’t be without it now!
