Sanyo lithium-ion batteries to backup traffic signals in Japan
That Japan has never been a country immune to natural disasters is no secret. Earthquakes, typhoons or volcanic eruptions have been accepted facts of life in here. Being as such they have been developing highly advanced solutions to combat the impact the disasters inflict.
This latest news comes as another good example of it. As traffic signals are powered by a commercial grid, their operation get obstructed a result of power cuts caused by natural disasters and it takes 30 seconds for the conventional emergency power generators to begin power supply. On the other hand, the lithium-ion battery power source back-up system Sanyo developed stays on even during the power cut.
According to Sanyo, the first prefecture to have the system installed will be Tokushima Prefecture. It will be composed of a total of 21 battery units sized 230 mm x 370 mm x 190 mm and composed of 312 cylindrical lithium-ion consumer use (UR18650) batteries each.
