Sony Memory Stick with Transfer Jet Technology Introduced in Japan

Having been first exposed during the CES 2010, Sony Transfer Jet Memory Stick now made its debut in its home country, Japan during a press conference held yesterday in Tokyo. The model they introduced was of 8GB capacity, however, we are expecting 16 GB and 32 GB versions to eventually follow.

Just some basic info for those who may be interested: Transfer Jet technology is close proximity wireless transfer technology developed by Sony. It allows wireless data transfer at speeds of up to 560 Mbps simply by holding the transmitting device within 3 cm of distance from the receiving device.

Beyond the 3 cm distance does the transfer speed drop gradually below the optimal 560Mbps speed or does the connection terminate?
If the working distance is merely 3cm max and you still have to insert an RF unit in the card reader so that it communicates with the memory stick why not save yourself all the trouble and insert the stick itself instead?
I mean apart from some possible marketing value I can’t see any useful applications of this
    “technology”.
Unless of course we see Transfer Jet compatible card readers in the future and the working distance extends to 15-20 cm.

3cm??? Jesus, just plug it in.

3cm means you can put your camera on top of a “pad” and download the pictures without even removing the memory card. That’s what i think is the purpose.
