Sharp two-in-one sensor, the GP2AP012A00F, integrates light and proximity sensors

The growing adoption by mobile and smart phones of touchpanels and facial proximity recognition UIs is stated to be the main trigger behind the creation of this device. It distinguishes itself not only as integrating the two sensors within a tiny body of 4.4×2.6×1.0(H)mm (2% less than conventional sensors) but also as being so sensitive to light intensity as low as 0.1 lux.
Sample price is announced to be 230 yen and the mass production is scheduled to start from January 29, 2010.
