NTT DOCOMO to launch trial operation of its Environmental Sensor Network

NTT DOCOMO takes a community- and environment-conscious step taking advantage of its already existing mobile network covering whole of Japan with their co-called “Environmental Sensor Network”. It is a network of environmental sensors that measure pollen, carbon dioxide (CO2), ultraviolet (UV) sunlight and other atmospheric conditions that can affect human health and daily life. The network of which trial operation is scheduled to be launched on December 21 will initially provide data on pollen through its sensors located in 300 locations in Kanto region surrounding Tokyo and bordering Shizuoka Prefecture. According to NTT Docomo, the network is planned to be expanded to 2,500 locations nationwide within fiscal 2010 (ends March 2011), then eventually to 9,000 locations with provision of data on the other designated areas as well.
