My First Japanese Mobile Phone “Keitai” Was a…

A Casio A3012CA… As you know Japan is in a week long public holiday and due to horrible weather in Tokyo (rainy, cloudy…) I decided to clean my office space at home and stumbled upon my first Japanese mobile phone, a Casio A3012CA…

It was released in Japan the 1st of April 2002 (I landed with my Japanese 3 years visa on April 15th same year). Coming from Hong-Kong and seeing such cool color phone was really a first for me. I choose this AU phone for several reasons:

1) Only AU offered a 3G (CDMA2000 1x) with nationwide coverage (swapping back to 2G if needed). The FOMA DoCoMo phones were only 3G and didn’t work well outside Tokyo.
2) First real slim 3G phones in Japan (48 x 94 x 25mm for 106g).
3) 12.8MB of internal memory
4) VGA camera phone
5) GPS.

Yep, but DoCoMo, was the first to get a 3G Network in Japan and in the World, it was in October 2001 (initial launch was suppose to be in May 2001)

Heh, my first “keitai” was FOMA P905i, surprisingly good 3G-enabled GSM-capable, perfectly working in… Russia ^_^. Yep, no i-mode/Jawa/GPS/1seg/FeliCa here, but the phone itself works. Soon we will have 3G allover the world. If not 4G…

When I used to live there, I remember my first one wasn’t a “keitai” per se, but a PHS: Toshiba Carrots… no 3G back then, but was able to connect it to a modem running a fast 28.8Kbps!

PHS are still widely use (Willcom) and until last year I still had a PHS Card from my laptop 300kbps.
