    SAS is “better” than SATA.

    1. Data speed is faster.
    - SATA 1 is 1.5 gbps
    - SATA 2 is 3.0 gbps
    - SAS is 6.0 gbps

    2. SAS hard drives have capability to run at higher rpm approx. 15,000. SATA is about 10,000.
    - This is due to the size of the form factor.
    - Platter size is 2.5 instead of 3.5 on SATA which means shorter access times.

    3. SAS uses less energy. Not sure how much but it’s probably quite a bit.

As for SSD which is Solid State Drive. This is a different type of hard drive. SATA and SATA are the connection type for “Hard drives”

SSD runs on SATA II, but I’m not sure on the other types of interfaces. SSD is a lot faster than hard drive since there’s no wait time on a spinning disc.

I’m not a fan of SSD yet. According to Wikipedia, they have limited write cycles. So the flash memory cells will wear out eventually.

So in the meantime wait for SAS hard drives to get cheaper and bigger capacity. If someone does manage to get a higher rpm then SAS hard drives will be a lot better just because they can transfer more data per second on the interface connection.

    For example,
Let’s say the speed limit for SAS 6.0 Gbps is 60 mph. We have a SAS hard drive that is at 15,000 RPM which is a car that has a max speed of 16 mph or so. The car can’t even go up to the speed limit so it’s not necessary to have the speed limit of 60 mph (6 Gbps) when it can’t go that fast.
