Two New Yawning Phones from Willcom

Willcom Japan (PHS Network) today announced two new mobile phones. The BAUM or WX340K features a 2.4” QVGA screen, 2Mpix camera, and a POP/SMTP feature (few phones except the iPhone and other WM devices in Japan support POP/SMTP)… and a design revolving around the… Well I am not really crazy about this, but the German cake Baumukuhen.

Then we have the WX340K with its 2.7” QVGA screen, 2Mpix AF camera, NetFront Web browser, and POP/SMTP.

Both phones support the Japanese electronic wallet called FELICA.

Exactly, in Germany it’s called “Baumkuchen” – the translation is “tree cake” because of the way it’s made: A rotating form is slashed again and again with dough – so finally, there are several layers of dough like the rings in a tree.

Not sure if I care for the overall design; maybe it would be slightly better if the colors were red on black, rather than black on red. However, I like that the keypad looks a lot more tactile than a lot of slim or candy bar style phones, and maybe it’d work on flip styles as well. I’d sacrifice a couple of centimeters in phone thickness for it.
