More information in the official press release below:

Seoul, South Korea, September 19, 2008 _ Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., a market leader in consumer electronics and world leader in IT technology, today announced its entry into the global netbook market with the launch of the Samsung NC10. Small, light and incredibly functional, the netbook NC10 is a stylish alternative to existing products in the space.

Going out in style

Developed with the needs of the “kinetic elite” in mind, the NC10 is expertly crafted so you can achieve even more on the move – and still look good! The superb look and feel of its ultra-compact and elegant chassis comes with the reassurance of a smooth and integrated manufacturing process. It is also accentuated with a choice of stylish colors – white, classic Samsung piano black and a unique metallic blue color.

Ultra Mobility

Even though it is one of the world’s lightest 10.2″ netbooks, weighing just 1.33kg* with a 6 cell battery, the NC10incorporates a stunning 10.2” WSVGA (1024 x 600) SuperBright© Non-Gloss LED screen and normal-size, ergonomic notebook PC style keyboard that makes it even easier to type in comparison to other products of its kind.

In addition, Intel’s smallest and lowest power processor, the Intel® Atom™ processor, enables the NC10 to deliver real computing power at a fraction of the weight, size and cost. By incorporating the Microsoft™ Windows® XP Home operating system coupled with options for 80-160GB hard disk storage, the NC10 also sets a new standard in price / performance for netbooks.

Always on the go

The NC10’s ultra durable Protect-o-Edge© casing can easily withstand the stresses and strains of everyday life, making this netbook the ideal companion for a mobile lifestyle. And for maximum freedom and mobility the NC10 delivers longer battery powered performance. With a 6 cell battery capable of just up to 8 hours*, this little powerhouse makes mobile working a more practical reality.

All you need to stay in touch

The NC10 offers a new way for consumers to access the Internet at home and on the move. It boasts a range of advanced communications technologies, including Atheros® 802.11b.g wireless LAN for fast Internet access, a 10/100 Ethernet LAN and optional Bluetooth 2.0+EDR*. It also incorporates an integrated digital motion camera, so it’s easy to stay in touch using video-conferencing or live messaging. Other features include a 3 in 1 multi-memory card reader, a VGA connection, mic in, headphone out and 3 x USB ports.

Anti Bacterial Keyboard

And finally, the NC10 features an amazing Samsung innovation – Silver Nano Technology. By sprinkling incredibly small, nano-sized silver ion powder on the keyboard it makes it impossible for bacteria to live and breed, creating a more hygienic personal computing environment.

Premium class, exceptional economy

The NC10 is ideally suited to the first-time buyer or as a supplement to a primary notebook. Its low price and practical functionality gives millions of new people a user friendly way to get onto the web, access emails and social networks.

Samsung has been looking at the netbook market for some time to see where Samsung could really add value for consumers, said Executive Vice President HS Kim, who leads Samsung’s computer systems division.

“Through our extensive R&D network, we have gained a true insight into consumers’ frustrations with these products, such as small keyboards and short battery life, which has been very valuable and has allowed us to develop a product we feel fits our customers needs,” Mr. Kim said. “Small and light, with the power and functionality for mobile working and web browsing, the NC10 delivers a true online experience from the palm of your hand.”

The Samsung NC10 will be available from October this year in European countries including UK, France, Germany, Spain, Italy and Netherlands, and also in Russia, China, Hong Kong and Korea.

If the laptop came out so recently, why does it not have recent software, what is so special about Windows XP SP3. why not Vista or windows 7.

  • dirtydave

Do you really want windows vista when i know from experience that it crashes a hell of a lot and uses far too much system memory due to it’s flashy graphics…

  • itsaUMPC

Its a UMPC. It uses Intel’s Atom processor, which is meant to conserve battery. Vista requires too much processing power, arguably without any reasons. Plus, who would want Vista anyways? I’m surprised that Samsung isn’t going to release one with Linux installed like Asus is with their eee PC.

  • smurf

Does it also come with a linux version?
Otherwise does it take LINPUS ?

  • wombley

Windows 7? Bit difficult to ship with an OS that hasn’t been released yet (and latest version is a pre-alpha not released to the public). Netbooks have less processing power than most other computers, hence the lack of vista (XP uses far less resources, and in general is a better OS).

  • compguru

For those of you talking down on Vista. I know from my experience using it ever since it came out that Vista is a much more stable OS overall. It has yet to BOSD like XP and although it does use a little more resources than XP, you are getting a host of extra features that you are not getting with XP..not to mention it’s more plug and play friendly, user friendly and stable.

Right now i’m running an older computer with 1.5ghz single core and 1.5 gb of RAM with Vista Ultimate and it does not show any signs of slowdown. It actually runs as well as XP did. So all of you saying that Vista crashes or is slow, you have no idea what you’re talking about. Either that or you used Vista when it first came out and lacked security updates and a service pack. All those issues are resolved.

I highly recommend Vista, and a netbook with an Atom processor and 2 gigs of RAM will run Vista with no problem. Heck, the Asus N10 series already comes pre-installed with Vista.

Friend got new dell notebook with vista and after few hours of trying to install dell multiprinter/scanner asked me to give it a go. That was my fist experince with Vista’s plug&pray. No, we didn’t install the dell printer on dell notebook with Vista. My friend ended up calling dell support and some guy from dell after only 2 hours of remote session managed to install it. So I am happy with my XP.

So does it run OS X?
