CY-ET908: A New ETC Card Reader for Improved Tollbooth Safety

Here in Japan a special card system has been developed to replace cash payments at tollbooths. Ideally, the ETC (Electronic Toll Collection) System allows a steady flow of traffic, but it has some flaws. For those unfamiliar, watch the following video for a “crash course” (It’s low-quality, but fairly representative of what happens when the system fails).

To improve traffic safety Panasonic has developed a new ETC card reader, the CY-ET908. It has a separate antenna and is the thinnest on the market (65×14.5x96mm). It also comes with an improved “Voice Guide” that provides a warning if your card is missing when you start your engine.

Here’s a video explanation of the ETC System.
