This war is going to drag for a long time. Microsoft is behind the inferior HD-DVD format, and they are not going to let it go easily.

It is likely Microsoft will do what they always do - throw money at it until either the world gives up and adopts it or Bill Gates goes bankrupt. Somehow the second option seems less likely. <img src="http://www.akihabaranews.com/img/smile.gif" width="15" height="15" border="0" alt=""/>

The only thing this format war has done is totally destroyed the progress HD format adoption. Both camps seemed to just assume that people would be naturally inclined for an upgrade, but the fact is, interest in the field is limited, and then on top of even limited customer interest, this bullshit serves as the final bow at turing off the customer.
In a way this is a good thing as I doubt players would have gotten this cheap this fast with just a single player, but who cares when no one wants a player just for the hassle of it all?
All I can say is good riddance, and I can only hope that FiOS/WiMax + an online distribution model can take advantage of this stagnation to kill the use of physical media for this stuff, anyway.
