KOBIE and RABIE, 2 new robot pets from ETRI

ETRI stands for Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute in Korea; they have developed 2 new networked-based robots, “KOBIE” and “RABIE”.
These two robots can express 7 different emotions (surprise, happiness, sorrow etc…) developed by “Active URC Server Framework Project”. In case of the “KOBIE” model, using a network, core technology is realized on the base of a low cost
H/W module.
KOBIE, designed in a Koala shape, can give emotional comfort and interest to users, which means it can be used as a medical application for patients who need psychological comfort. Using built-in sensors, KOBIE can recognize touch from users, and express relevant movement with eye contacts.
In regard to “RABIE”, it is a network robot which can play with kids and transmit the video to mobile phone, and using the emoticon display on the eyes, RABIE can show various emotions.
