Mitsubishi and Pioneer Develop Cheaper Way of Making Blu-ray Discs

Announced at CEATEC today, Mitsubishi Kagaku Media and Pioneer have taken another step forward for Blu-ray disc technology. They have found a way to develop the BR-D discs using organic materials, which should cut the costs down for them. While this development comes a year after HD DVD, it will probably have a bigger impact than people realize.

The companies said that they will not commercialize it until the end of 2007, or beginning of 2008. This could help push the Blu-ray camp into higher gear. Along with the announcement came the good news that they can now burn them at 2x, and they are working on 4x with multiple layers. Hopefully I can get some more information on them tomorrow at CEATEC.
