Samsung Highlights New Leading-edge LCD Technologies at IMID

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., the world’s largest provider of thin-film transistor liquid crystal display (TFT-LCD) panels, will be exhibiting LCD panels featuring some of the most advanced technology in the world at IMID (International Meeting on Information Display) 2007, being held at EXCO in Daegu, Korea from August 27 to 31. Samsung is exhibiting at booth # I-13.

Samsung will display six 52-inch diagonal LCD panels from the eighth-generation production line for the first time.

In addition, Samsung will spotlight advances made in LCD technology, particularly in the area of image enhancement. Samsung’s “Local Dimming” technology features an LED backlight with hundreds of independently controlled sections. With the local dimming, illumination is precisely restricted to those areas on the screen that need to be lit, while the light source is completely cut off from the dark areas. This technique reduces power consumption while producing a “truer black,” to enable an outstanding contrast ratio.

Samsung also will exhibit its newly developed 120Hz McFi (motion-compensated frame interpolation) technology. This proprietary technology substantially reduces blurring by refreshing motion picture images at twice the speed of today’s conventional 60Hz models.

Beyond TVs, Samsung will showcase its new line of digital information displays (DIDs). Used for advertising in public spaces, both indoor and outdoor, Samsung’s DID line features a 70-inch diagonal LCD panel, the largest LCD now in mass production.

40-inch and 46-inch DIDs with narrow bezels will generate a great deal of interest at the IMID show, as they minimize image distortions that can occur along a screen’s edges. The flexibility of Samsung DIDs to present images and data either vertically or horizontally also will be evident at the show.

Samsung is showcasing 24-inch LCD panels that satisfy increasing demand for TVs with full high definition resolution, as well as offer the optimal screen size for showing two pages simultaneously on Windows Vista. All monitor panels displayed at IMID have a wide aspect ratio and LED backlighting, underscoring Samsung’s focus on the premium market.

In addition, Samsung will show a broad lineup of advanced mobile displays that have been designed to satisfy a wide range of customer needs and diverse market demands. These include a 2.1-inch LCD designed for low power consumption, a 3-inch LCD with ultra-high-resolution (VGA: 640 x 480 pixels) and wide viewing angles, a 4.8-inch LCD with a single-display-driver IC chip, and a 7-inch LCD with a built-in touch screen.

Additionally, IMID 2007 visitors will see Samsung’s 14.3-inch (A-4 paper size) plastic color e-Paper and 40-inch black-and-white e-Paper, two other promising state-of-the-art technologies.

At IMID, Samsung also will highlight the results of its research into organic materials that can serve as the basis for fully flexible displays, which are likely to play a major role in future display technology. Samsung’s organic thin-film-transistor (TFT) substrate samples are estimated to be a year ahead of other display manufacturers.

At the conference, Seong Sik Shin, senior vice president of Flexibla Display Lab, will discuss Samsung’s technology developments and its direction regarding LCDs, OLEDs and flexible displays.
