Onkyo Launches the HD805

Onkyo USA has officially launched its first HD-DVD player.

Dubbed the DV-HD805, the player uses HDMI 1.3a, which helps create “Deep Color”, which should create better color tones and reach better color gradation. Besides the obvious, the player supports variable frame rates with playback at 24 frames per second. And in case you want to update the player, it includes an Ethernet port.

The DV-HD805 also includes Onkyo’s HQV Reon VX video processing technology which scales to 720p, 1080i or 1080p while enhancing the quality of regular ol’ DVDs. Besides video, the player also supports lossless surround sound formats, Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio, as well as two lossy formats, Dolby Digital Plus and DTS-HD High Resolution Audio.

Look for the DV-HD805 this fall for a reported $900.

Please get off the Deep Color bandwagon of hype. In order for ANY HDMI 1.3 device to transmit or display Deep Color, the content itself must be encoded with the Deep Color bit-rate and spec. No movies—repeat NO MOVIES—are or will be encoded in Deep Color within the foreseeable future (at least not in any existing format). It\’s not in the HD DVD or Blu-ray spec. So fuggedaboudit. It\’s meaningless hype for a spec which isn\’t supported by anything other than hardware.
