HD DVD Player and 3 HD DVDs for $99?

In response to the threat of Blu-ray selling so well here in the States, Toshiba has announced that it will be offering a promotional sale at the Home Media Expo’s EMA show where the company will offer its HD A2 HD DVD player and three HD DVD movies for a cool $99.

Sounds pretty good, right? Don’t get ahead of yourself. In order to get into the show, you will need to dish out between $100 and $500 and the deal is only for attendees – no one else.

In response to an endless supply of questions, Toshiba released the following statement: “The $99 player is an accommodation price only for attendees of the Home Media Expo’s EMA trade show this week and is being offered by the HD DVD Promotional Group. It is not in any way connected with a broader consumer offer from Toshiba.”

Oh well. Looks like you’ll have to wait another year for those kind of prices.

One thing I like about many HDDVDs I see marketed is that they have both HDDVD and DVD sides. In other words, the movies can be played both in older units, and in new ones. While I do not have a HDDVD player, that has attracted me to that standard.

On the other hand, Bluray has always reminded me of the proprietary BetaMax standard. And the lack of wide support due to the proprietary nature of BetaMax caused a lot of issues in getting tapes.

Another format that had this problem was Divx, which was a so-many-uses disk that Best Buy tried selling heavily. It also failed here. (Note: This is NOT divx the video compression software.) So if HD avoids the proprietary trap, and has this sort of price drop, chances are high it will win in the USA.
