Genius sent over their Maurus mouse for testing (mentioned previously in this review). The Maurus was specially optimized for RTS/FPS games.

Design

The Maurus is a very slick symmetrical mouse featuring 1 large macro button on both sides of the unit. The top of the Maurus is built from a glossy plastic, where the sides are made from a slightly rougher matte plastic. The middle scroll wheel was made from silicone rubber and is illuminated (white only). The feeling of this wheel is particularly comfortable for surfing the web or performing office related tasks.

Below the scrolling wheel you’ll find the GX Gaming scorpion logo, the logo itself is a grey inset on the dark glossy plastic and is quite cool. Inside the scorpion (or rather say: running through) there is a transparent plastic inset ‘GX GAMING’ logo, backlit like the scroll wheel.

Impression

The Maurus mouse is a particularly lightweight mouse compared to its bigger brother (the Deathtaker). This implies the Maurus being much more swift in movement and smoother in rapid click actions. Personally we found the Deathtaker to have an improved feeling for shooters (FPS) and a bit too big for fast building in strategy or RPG games. The Maurus however does feel incredibly smooth for the RTS genre; you will benefit both in smooth drag & drop actions and a very fast (I dare say softer) click compared to the Deathtaker.

Genuis recommends this mouse for both RTS and FPS, so we tested it on a few of the popular shooters and have to say the way it handles them is good; shooters in general keep your visor/aim in a fairly centralized zone on the screen. This is where the additional weight of the Deathtaker will avoid you from sliding too far and miss the kill.

The Maurus’s lightweight design will do an accurate job for people with small hands /sleek fingers. For gamers with a bigger hand I believe the Deathtaker will feel much more accurate and sturdy when roaming the warzone. That said, on the strategy side where going up and down and left/right on the screen’s edges, the lighter Maurus will most certainly favor all types of gamers.
