[CEATEC 2012] Sharp ICC-LED 4K TV is what we have all been waiting for!

[CEATEC 2012] Sharp ICC-LED 4K TV is what we have all been waiting for!

My dear readers, we have been lied to! Full HD Movies can be AMAZING at least thanks to Sharp and its ICC Technology!
When the first full HD Movie arrived we were all amazed by the sharpness of these videos on our 37 or 42″ TVs, but since a few years 60 and 80″ TVs start to become more common, at least for those who can afford them, but truth to be told 1080p movies on these display look just plain horrible.
Now add to this a layer of “4K’ and you have the prefect recipe for a complete disaster… But, lucky for us Sharp as the solution for us and behold the first ICC-LED 4K TV prototype.

What so special with this new ICC-LED TV? Well first of all we are talking about a pure 4K TV wonder with a stunning 3,840 × 2,160 pixels resolution that is capable to offer ultra Sharp and 4K Like 1080p videos! Yep you read me well! Thanks to the joint collaboration with I-cubed Research Center Inc in Japan, Sharp has been able to upscale 1080p video into 4K ones without any lost in details, even better these 1080p video look like real 4K ones!

Don’t believe me? Well just look at the picture above and start drooling! The video feed on both screen is the same, a nice 1080p one but as you can see the ICC-LED 4K Prototype on the right side give you astonishing and ultra clear 4K Like details. Sure these new ICC based 4TV won’t come cheap, but the good news is that thanks to I-cubed Research Center Inc and Sharp you will not be force to burn all your old BDs and start investing on 4K remasterisation of your favorite movies!

There is so much fail in this post I almost don’t know where to begin. Firstly, 1080p movies do *not* look terrible on 60-80″ screens. I watch Blu-rays on a screen 4 meters wide and the resolution still holds up quite nicely, even from a seating distance of 1x screen width! Sure, it’s no 4K but it most definitely does not look “horrible”, not on a 60″ screen and not on a 230″ screen either.

Secondly, what on earth are you blithering about, “upscale 1080p video into 4K ones without any lost in details”? There’s never any loss in detail when upscaling from 2K/1080p to 4K digitally!

Thirdly, that picture you refer to says absolutely nothing, zilch, nix, nada, about the display’s scaling capabilities. Both screens in the photo look exactly the same resolution-wise. The only difference is somewhat different colours.

Honestly, what a terrible “news” post.

1080p look really bad on huge screen, why? Simply because the pixels are MUCH bigger than on smaller ones TVs, and you start seeing the limitation of such display due to this very simple fact.

Now, that you do not want to believe me or Sharp on this one is fine, I personally don’t care, but the fact that they succeed to upscale 1080p in making it gorgeous on an 4K TV is just a fact. Look at the second photo in the gallery, the Display on the right offer more details of the same 1080p video that is shown on the left. In addition the left screen, due to larger/bigger pixel offer a less “sharp” image that give to the overall video some kind of “blurry” effect that you won’t find on the ICC-LED 4K One.

The only time 1080p movies looked terrible were on my old rear-projection HDTV. :)
