Photo Imagine Expo 07: Nikon D40x with K-Y jelly

I won’t bee too objective on this one, but as a Canon fanboy, I have to speak out against the Nikon D40 which leaves a bunch of customers in the dust with an under-equipped camera compared to competitive products, only to provide them later on with an updated model (the full story about the D40 and D40x here). After fooling its customers Nikon is offering a mega show about the D40x at the PIE 2007. If you own a D40, we’ve heard rumors that Nikon will soon send you by mail a tube of K-Y jelly to ease the pain…

Many professional camera review sites comment that owners of D40 shouldn’t feel bad about the D40X, and I most definitely agree! D40 is currently has one of the cheapest MSRP for a DSLR, and it is totally aimed for people who are new to DSLR. The only (major) difference between D40 and D40X is the number of megapixels. People should be warned that megapixels do not relate to picture quality. In fact, non-DSLR cameras with lower megapixel often takes better picture than the one with more. Also, 6 megapixel is more than enough to keep average people satisfied (and many times, its too large anyway). If you read many professional reviews about D40, it has an amazing picture quality, as well low noise level that is comparable to Canon Rebel XTi! So when D40X comes out, I’d rather suggest that people get D40 cause the price will go down. And if you think D40 is underpowered, then you shouldn’t be even looking at this camera since this is aimed towards prosumers, not professionals.

The D40 is a very good camera. True, the D40x has a higher resolution sensor, but it is also going to cost more money. No one is getting F’d in the A here.

This is a great and very thorough write-up! I hadn’t browsed a Mouser catalog since I was in tech school, but this really piques my interest. Good job!

D40 users can feel fine with their purchase – the D40x is +$200USD for a megapixel upgrade. For a lot of people looking for a starter DSLR, the megapixel addition doesn’t seem worth the price/performance ratio without any other feature additions. Also, this puts the D40x closer to the D80, which actually does have a significant increase in features, and that should be a bit cheaper now due to the fact that it’s simply been out on the market for a bit.
